  General Informations



The main goal of the ESTEEM project is the design and the implementation of a platform for emergent semantics in multi-knowledge environments, where semantic communities can interoperate according to the P2P paradigm.

The ESTEEM platform will provide a comprehensive framework for data and service integration in P2P systems, and advanced solutions for consensus-driven construction of semantic communities, trust and quality management, P2P physical infrastructure design, query processing, and dynamic service discovery, composition and matching.

Furthermore, since parties of a semantic communities may be dislocated in different contexts and may need to access data through heterogeneous devices, the ESTEEM platform will provide features for mobile and ubiquitous information access and storage, and multichannel delivery.

Techniques and solutions provided by the ESTEEM platform will be deployed as Web services on the reference P2P middleware architecture and demonstrated in the application scenario of scientific collaboration in medicine.

The activities of the University of Rome "La Sapieza" concern:

  • definition of a formal specification of trust-aware P2P data integration systems and for query processing in such systems;
  • design of a P2P infrastructure which guarantees basic primitives for peers interoperation. This infrastructure will provide peers with basic primitives like (i) resource location, (ii) group membership, (iii) point-to-point and point-to-multipoint communication;
  • identification of a suitable semantic model to specify well-defined semantics both for the single peers, and for query answering in a P2P system. The semantics will take into account additional information on the quality of data in the system, and the level of trust among peers.

The contibution of the University of Milano is focused on:

  • the development of advanced methods and techniques for the dynamic, consensus-driven formation of semantic communities of peers around common interests for semantic collaboration and resources discovery;
  • the definition of an ontology-based language to specify sharing policies for conditional availability of the peers in answering incoming requests and for conditional resource sharing within a semantic community.

University of Brecia will investigate the design of advanced methods and techniques for the semantic service discovery and use in collaborative multi-knowledge environments for semantic collaboration and interoperation.

Its research activities will be devoted to the development of:

  • ontology-based matching techniques based on deductive reasoning and similarity;
  • flexible composition techniques taking into account dynamic aspects of service evolution.

Politecnico of Milano will develop:

  • advanced methodologies, methods and techniques mainly for context-aware design of very small, semistructured databases stored on small devices and semantic based synchronisation between the different information sources and the small devices;
  • methods and techniques for the dynamic selection in order to search for, to adapt to the local context and semantics, and possibly to store on the portable device the required information.
